JOURNEY TO THE END

By Quentin Smith

Screaming for shelter from the starlight,

I stumble through the black mountains

And pray that I will not end

Like sea waves being smashed on the rocks.

My head is knocked by a stray wing

That is blown in from the ocean,

And I fall and dream

Of pebbles on a beach

That are white in the sunlight;

But on awakening I see

The uncanny fires burning in the dark,

And know that I cannot but go over

Like a fence curling off a cliff top.
